Asimina triloba is a deciduous tree, under-story tree in the tremendous Annonaceae family. It is the only tropical fruit native to the temperate climate. AKA Indiana Banana. It is native to the eastern U.S.A. where in spring, 6-petaled, purplish-brown flowers mature and are pollinated by flies. The leaves turn a yellow color in the fall and drop early.

Growing conditions: Pawpaw groves germinate in moist, nutrient-rich forests. They will tolerate occasional wet or moist conditions but prefer good drainage and acidic soil.

Size at maturity: 15’-20’

Uses: If you’ve ever had a good pawpaw, it’s something you won’t ever forget. Custard-like in texture with a whole range of tropical flavors. Bred cultivars tend to be more fruit-forward, think mango, banana and coconut all in one…while the wild fruit tends toward more earthy flavors such as coffee and vanilla. Pawpaws have seen an explosion in popularity over the last decade and are being bred for fruit size and flavor.

USDA Hardiness Zone: 5-8
