Jubileum tart cherry on Mahaleb

from $31.00

Besides Balaton, I am most excited about this cherry because it blooms a bit later than Danube, giving us a bit more of a chance to see some fruit with our notoriously unpredictable Kentucky spring weather.

A similar Hungarian cherry to Balaton, which has been very popular in our small nursery for mid-Appalachian growers that aren’t cold enough to grow sweet cherries but can grow tart-sweet cherries. It is a Morello cherry (dark skin, dark flesh) from Nugary and is a sour cherry with high sugar content and firm flesh, making it palatable for fresh eating if left on the tree to fully ripen. There are reported health benefits to this cherry, being high in anthocyanin, which is anti-cancer and anti-inflammatory! Get em while they’re good, we will sell out of this one.

Rootstock: Mahaleb

Size at maturity: 16-20’

Pollination: Self-fertile, although it is seen that crops are more regular with the presence of a sweet cherry.
