Danube tart cherry on Mahaleb

from $31.00

A similar Hungarian cherry to Balaton, which has been very popular in our small nursery for mid-Appalachian growers that aren’t cold enough to grow sweet cherries but can grow tart-sweet cherries. It is a Morello cherry (dark skin, dark flesh) and is a sour cherry with high sugar content and firm flesh, making it palatable for fresh eating if left on the tree to fully ripen. Brought back to the USA by Amy Lezzoni, who also brought Balaton.

Rootstock: Mahaleb

Size at maturity: 16-20’

Pollination: Self-fertile, although it is seen that crops are more regular with the presence of a sweet cherry.
